A Tranquil Escape to Banyoles, Cataloniaβs Hidden Gem

Nestled in the province of Girona, Banyoles is a charming town best known for its stunning lake, Estany de Banyoles.
Whether a nature lover, history enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, this lesser-known Catalan destination offers a perfect mix of outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and scenic beauty.

Surprisingly, there aren’t many lakes in the Catalonia region so this lake is a real treat. My husband spent many summers by the ocean in the south of Spain or the sea here in Catalonia, but has never swum in a lake! It’s hard to imagine for this Canadian, but I’ve met many European people who can relate.

Although the town is charming and brimming with Catalan tradition, the lake is the main attraction. Surrounded by walking and cycling paths, it’s an excellent spot for a leisurely stroll, a morning jog, or even a peaceful boat ride.

It’s quite a wonder as it is not attached to any rivers but gets its water from rain and snowmelt from the surrounding mountains. The water travels through limestone and is expressed into the lake by aquifers or springs in the lake bed and shoreline.

Even in the afternoon, when most bodies of water are brimming with waves and movement, this lake stays still. This makes for perfect rowing conditions. And along with a vibrant rowing club, Banyoles hosted the rowing events during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics!

The reflections of the Pyrenees in the water make it an especially picturesque place for photography lovers. I took so many photos and could have taken more!

If you’re interested in local history, check out the Banyoles Archaeological Museum, where you can learn about prehistoric settlements in the area.

The Draga Neolithic Park offers a glimpse into prehistoric life. This archaeological site features reconstructions of ancient huts and tools, showcasing how people lived in the area 7,000 years ago.

Visit the Banyoles Wetlands
A short walk from the lake, the La Puda and Les Estunes wetlands are a peaceful place to observe local wildlife. Youβll find small caves and fascinating rock formations, plus itβs a great area for birdwatching.
The Town
The historic center is small but full of charm. Wander through its medieval streets, admire Plaça Major, a porticoed square perfect for a coffee break, and visit the Church of Santa Maria dels Turers, which dates back to the 13th century.

Veg Friendly Eats
Banyoles may be a small town, but it’s not without options for plant-based travelers. While traditional Catalan cuisine is heavy on seafood and meats, many restaurants offer vegan and vegetarian alternatives.

Figueras Forn de Pa – PlaΓ§a dels Estudis, 7, 17820 Banyoles, Girona – For Delicious vegan chocolate croissants and coffee with plant based milk alternatives.
Can Pericas β A local favorite with some plant-based Catalan dishes. This place looks fresh and tasty with some nice veg friendly options in their gastro bar area.
Aquarium Cafe – A lovely restaurant popular with the outdoorsy crowd. The menu looks absolutely delicious, with plenty of vegan and vegetarian dishes.
Gastrobar Can Xabanet β Offers tapas, including veggie choices.

And of course, you can always choose a picnic by the lake. There are plenty of picnic tables and grassy spots to lay out a blanket. There are public washrooms on the premises as well. We brought our food from home, but you could easily grab some fruit and take-out from the local supermarkets or shops.
